Katy Perry Opens Up About Her Depression & Relationship

You may have noticed that Katy Perry has kept a very low profile in the last few months. Aside from putting an end to her long-running feud with Taylor Swift (by literally sending her an olive branch), the singer has been pretty M.I.A. But in a new interview with Vogue Australia, Katy opened up about the tough year she’s had, revealing that it had everything to do with her most recent album, Witness. She admitted that she was “heartbroken over the underwhelming reviews it received.”

Now, over a year after its release, she discussed how the negative reaction to her fifth studio album affected her mental health. “I have had bouts of situational depression and my heart was broken last year because, unknowingly, I put so much validity in the reaction of the public, and the public didn’t react in the way I had expected to… which broke my heart,” she told the magazine.

She continued, “Music is my first love and I think it was the universe saying: ‘Okay, you speak all of this language about self-love and authenticity, but we are going to put you through another test and take away any kind of validating “blankie.” Then we’ll see how much you do truly love yourself.’”

She revealed that she attended a week-long retreat at the Hoffman Institute in California last January, which helped her “let go of anything that was holding [her] back from being [her] ultimate self.” She also said that reconnecting with a higher power gave her a “wholeness [she] never had.”

We’re so happy to hear. We can only imagine how hard it must be for an artist to release an album that they think is a failure in the eyes of their fans. We see you Katy, and we hope that she doesn’t let Witness’s “failure” stop her from releasing more music in the future.

Elsewhere in her interview, Katy revealed that while her relationship with Orlando Bloom is important to her, it’s only ONE part of her. She opened up about how she doesn’t like the way she’s perceived in the media when it comes to her on-again, off-again romance with the actor. Rumors about their relationship continue to circulate regularly, reporting that they’re either together or splitting up on a regular basis.

Katy said that she doesn’t talk about him in interviews because she doesn’t want it to be the focal point in the magazine or website’s headlines. She explained that it takes away from other other equally important aspects of her life, such as her work and political activism.

“I don’t want it to be a headline of the story, because it takes away from the purpose,” she told Vogue. “Also, it’s extremely misogynistic. Of course, I love my relationship, but that is one part of me, and I don’t want any part of what I do to be diminished.”

A great example of this was during her visit to the Vatican in April. It was a huge moment for her when she got to meet the Pope, but people were more interested in the fact that Orlando was with her.

She makes a really valid statement point, and it’s something many other female celebrities have brought up, as well. The media is obsessed with Hollywood couples and while some use it to their advantage (PR, etc.), others, like Katy, would prefer to keep those subjects on the DL so her real work can show. Katy is an extremely talented artist who should not be defined – nor overshadowed – by who she’s dating.
