The Weeknd Scrapped an Entire Album After His Split with Selena Gomez

The Weeknd’s ego wasn’t the only thing that was affected by his split from Selena Gomez. It turns out the singer produced an “upbeat” album while they were still dating, but after their love died and the couple called it quits in October 2017, so did his album. The album he did drop – My Dear Melancholy – has done well on the charts, but The Weeknd revealed that he initially intended to release some happier songs. Unfortunately, he had his heart broken and now we’ll never hear his original album.

“Prior to Melancholy, I had a whole album written, done. Which wasn’t melancholy at all because it was a different time in my life,” he told Time magazine. “It was very upbeat — it was beautiful.”

But when his circumstances and relationship status changed, he decided to scrap the whole thing. “I don’t want to perform something that I don’t feel,” he continued, adding that we’ll “never” hear it. But if you were expecting The Weeknd to open about the breakup, think again. He admitted that he doesn’t “want to open that Pandora’s box, talking about relationships,” but that the recording process was “therapeutic” for him. “You want to get it out. It’s like you close a chapter,” he said.

As a result, we were blessed with songs like “Call Out My Name.” Much of the track’s lyrics seemed to be directed specifically at Selena, including a few lines which fans immediately thought was a reference to Selena’s kidney transplant and her relationship with Justin Bieber. “I said I didn’t feel nothing, baby, but I lied/ I almost cut a piece of myself for your life,” The Weeknd sings, which many thought was him having offered to donate his kidney to her.

He then gets a little salty, which is understandable considering Selena was seen with her on-again-off-again boyfriend shortly after their breakup. “Guess I was just another pit stop/ ‘Til you made up your mind/ You just wasted my time,” he croons.

The Weeknd also said he was single at the time of the magazine interview. Clearly, things could have definitely changed since then. In case you didn’t hear, he was spotted getting cozy with ex-girlfriend Bella Hadid at the Cannes Film Festival last week. The two were photographed kissing at a party and many onlookers said they didn’t seem to care who saw their PDA. Then, they were spotted “making out” a second time throughout the premiere of Spike Lee’s film, BlacKkKlansman, which has led many to believe that the former couple is giving their relationship another shot at love.

We wouldn’t be surprised if these two reunite. After all, the parts of My Dear Melancholy that weren’t about Selena were probably about how much he missed Bella. Perhaps there’s another upbeat Weeknd album in his future or he’ll change his mind about the scrapped songs? We hope so.
